One of the finest sets of game analysis posts I've seen from either the old or the new boards, and a real joy to read. Having been down the sticks here in Ting Tang land (the only wireless is when they use a tree as a clothes line) I didn't get to see, hear or read about the game until now. The result on the mobile from the folks at home was the one saving Grace.
So, what happend to Quill in the second half. Can somebody outline the starting 15 and where they moved to as the game progressed?

Agree with most of Joxer’s assessment. However, I am concerned about Sheehan? He has the talent unquestionably but he just hasn’t got going for whatever reason. He’s free taking has been his saving grace up to a point. On the whole his free’s are outstanding however, he has been in scenarios where his faced real pressure kicks and missed. Last year against Cork there is a strong case that his missing of 3 free’s in the first game were vital to the result and again the last night against Tyrone he missed his most vital kick. Now, I put that down to a young player finding his feet and hoping he would develop from there. It’s not a question of talent it’s more a question of mentality. Brian Sheehan is a great footballer and he just needs to start believing it and he will make this Kerry team.

free taking is a crucial part of intercounty and indeed club success.
bryan misses the odd big one all right which is slightly disappointing.
were not blessed with natural free takers on the panel at the moment, colm missed some vital kicks this season for the crokes which might have landed a county championship and all-ireland club championship,ie the free to tie the county final, the free to secure the drawn all-ireland club final to put them 2 up and the missed penalty which might have been a factor.
it would be a real bonus if bryan secured a place on the team,he will proberly be given every chance to do so,will he be a better half line player then galvin, sean ban, declan, brosnan though?,thats the six million dollar queastion. He is a non event on the full forward line. In his defence you have to appreciate the majestic free kick that won the county final,he will kick more than he misses at the end of the day.
not to be picking on colm in anyway the day after losing a final i think looking at free taking in the county at the moment helps to appreciate the class act maurice was and how vital he was to kerry.
would maurice have missed the free to tie the county final, the free to secure the all-ireland club final or the penalty in the replay, highly unlikely. i think of his sideline ball v dublin in thurles to tie a quarter final very late, his free to tie the all-ireland semi final in '00,his sideline ball to ice the '97 cake, for me these are some of the moments that make maurice the best kerry player of the last 30 years in my opinion,an invaluable and irreplaceable asset.

With Bryan's strong kicking he should be pointing long distance from play. The problem is that he either doesn't get himself in good enough positions/space or that he does but is too slow pulling the trigger. He got blocked down on Saturday when he might have scorerd. However he has scored some fine points from play in the past, just needs to work on it more and gain confidence.
If Bryan is not on the forty yard line somewhere , who will be his replacement? Darren, Fitz,or Walsh. I think he will be ahead of all these come championship time when his free taking ability will be vital.

Was at the game. The interesting thing for me was that several of our fringe players are just not up to inter county football. Galvin, Declan, Gooch and Brosnan will walk back into the team without any pressure. We have learned nothing positive from this league campaign. All we have learned is that: Quill is still not tough enough to win his own ball in the white heat of championship Walsh, bohane, guiney, lyons, reidy and scanlon all look a step off the pace Brian Sheehan has not improved and has probably gone backwards in his development Quirke might as well pack it in when he did'nt get a run Saturday night. We had no fullforward and Darragh had no help midfield and he still got no run. Fitzmaurice has got messed around again and has not been given the opportunity to stake down a place in his preferred position of centre back. Moving him to fullforward the last night was a joke and an insult. Advice to Pat O'Shea 1. Mahoney is your centre back. Don't move him out of there again needlessly 2. Be prepared to switch Marc and Tom Sullivan if Tom comes under pressure from the high ball. I would target Kerry here if i was playing against them. 3. Killian Young is the one positive from the league campaign 4. Get a back up free taker fast - Sheehan cannot keep his place on a Kerry team just for frees. 5 Pick a support midfielder for Darragh and stick with him. Griffin, Scanlon and Brosnan are your options. Scanlon is the best aerial player if teams do what tyrone did and move Darragh out to the sideline for their kickouts. 6. Tell Galvin to cop on. He was a disgrace the last night. If they bring in Player Cam's he will be suspended for years! 7. If Donaghy is 14 play diagonal ball into him rather than the big straight hoofing we have seen all year. 8. For this reason and his speed andworkrate we need Sean Sullivan at 10. 9. Teach Darren O'Sullivan, Donnacha Walsh, Bohane, Guiney, Lyons have to play intercounty football. Some of them hide from the ball and just pass it off to the nearest man to them. Need to take responsibility on the field. Others like Walsh and Darren just put the head down and run aimlessly. 10. Take the Gooch on the beer for a couple of weeks and bring him back fresh. I would agree with all of this. Spot on.

For me the most influential player for Kerry over the past 10 years is Dara o Shea. Maurice was the most skillful. Like comparing Paul o Connell and Brian o Driscoll i suppose. I would take Paul o Connell everytime.

brian o driscoll isnt fit to lace maurices boots,
kerry wouldnt have won all-irelands in '97 and 00 without maurice,
i agree in latter years dara has become very influential,we wouldnt have won in '06 without him,a truely great kerry footballer, himself, seamus and maurice are modern day legends of the game and all time kerry greats.

I always felt that Dara never got the credit he should have got in 1997. Pat Fallon had cleaned up in the semi final.. Dara was very young and he and Kirby won midfield and provided the possession from which Maurice prospered.

i thought kirby was a top notch kerry midfielder too, remember him in '04 also,3 points from midfield,he would have four all-ireland medals also only for two bad injuries.
agree re dara,i think he is getting better all the time to be honest, and is entering the zone inhabited by micko o connell and jack o shea,he proberly has surpassed the great seanie walsh at this stage.

I'm not much of a rugby fan, but I believe that Ireland would struggle badly without EITHER O'Connell or O'Driscoll. All the cliches about O'Connell being "the spiritual leader" and O'Driscoll being "the creative temperamental one" dont change the fact that O'Driscoll's drive & leadership were missed against France.
Anyway, back to the real discussion. I think Kerry are desperate for a shot at Tyrone, or yis will never rest aisy

If Kerry meet tyrone in 2007 it will be a different situation to 2005 and 2003 when they recoiled from the hard stuff. The OSheas, galvin, O Mahoney, Tom Sull wont be found wanting if it becomes a war of attrition....... jaysus i am lookin foward to it already
