Come to think of it our backs are suddenly looking threadbare. We haven't altered this line much at all since 2004 (in the championship anyway) and now we've lost Moynihan, McCarthy and Fitzmaurice. mossie Lyons will be there or thereabouts. reidy looked a bit weak to me. Prone to losing the ball in posession. Bohane was alright but yet to be seen in heat of battle. Where I'd be worried is if Tom Sull or Tomás for example pick up an injury. I wouldn't break up a mid-field that has done us well in the past namely Darragh and Tommy G. Scanlon will push but I don't know if he's worth a starting berth. The forwards is really where Pat has a bit of room for manouvre. Its really up to him and how he sees it working. Its already been suggested that he won't be a slave to the Star at full forward tactic. this may not be a bad thing. We should have variety in our game and the day will come when Star is shackled. Quill is the never ending enigma of Kerry football. However if anyone can make him into a championship player its probably Pat Shea who should know a thing or two about corner forward play. He'll have to make a call on Sheahan. It may depend on how training is going but his perfomances in the league would not merit a start in my opinion were it not for his free taking. I find his work -rate isn't up to scratch. I'd go with Galvin, Brosnan / Dec Sullivan and Sean Sullivan for the 40 and Gooch, Star and Quill / MFR for the full fwd line. Form in training would have to decide the close calls. Obviously Sheahan will be close to making the team but if Gooch and MFR/Quill can handle the frees we'll be fine.

I agree with your assessment entirely animal, very fair and balanced. Certainly the backs give more pauses for concern than the forwards. As for young Sheehan, in all honesty his league performances haven’t warranted a starting place. However, his free taking ability is outstanding albeit so far he has missed the real pressure kicks that mattered (last year against Cork 1st game and this year’s league game with Tyrone). I’m wondering if he has the mental temperament for the big stage as much as anything. He has undoubted talent but for whatever reason hasn’t got going (even when injury free). Still, I would love the Caherciveen man to make it if selected.

bryan played very well v mayo in the first round in terms of covering back and covering ground,a new element to his game,he subsequently picked up an injury after that and it stunted his progress in the league,i think if can stay injury free he will compete very strongly for a starting place.

No doubt Bryan will push hard for his place and he'd walk onto a lot of county teams. However I just feel his workrate overall leaves a bit to be desired. I was at the Dublin game recently and he was very poor especially from frees. If we go for a highly mobile forward unit his style might not suit. Maybe injury was an issue during the league and I don't want to be harsh on the guy.

Time will reveal all. Good comments guys keep them coming.
Who do people think will provide cover at fullback if something was to happen to Tom? Or, if possibly the fullback position isn’t working out for Tom over the course of the Championship, is there other options? Furthermore, how do we cope with the likes of Cork’s skyscraper, Michael Cussen at full-forward?

Good point about Cussen, one thing we are lackin in defense is a bit of height, all about 5'10 to 6ft but would find it difficult deal wit a player like Cussen.

Good point Mick Mack. I think we'd have to play cussen from the front a bit like how Seamus eventually figured out how to play Corkery. Not always easy if the ball is being pumped in on top of the full fwd. But who better to prepare against but the prototype!

I did suggest before that if Cork are to play Cussen, where ever they play him against other teams, against Kerry he should not be a full forward, for the simple reason ye would know how to mark players like him. Not sure Cork will play him in that role either mind you, it's just an option.

I wouldnt worry bout cussen one bit. Sure if the kerry fullback is up against the best in the business aka donaghy in training every night im sure he will be able to mark cussen. Anyways what makes donaghy so good is his basketball backround. Bomber also had the advantage of playing basketball underage. Cussen doesnt have any of this. There will be loads of donaghy clones this summer but none as good as the real thing. As the add goes u cant beat real butter
