The gaa can learn a lot from the rugby experience. French and English clubs have pulled out of the competition for selfish financial reasons mainly. The Munster and Leinster professionals will be poorer as a result.
Big lessons there for the GAA

true but theres also big lessons to learn by the fact that brian mcguigan has to endure the imbaressment of a sale of work/auction what ever you want to call it to help him out financially because he had to climb a ladder on a building site before he was fully healed to make ends meet.

This was predicted from a while back. The goose that layed the golden eggs has been killed, but you can be sure, with the money & prestige to be earned, there will be some other European League/Cup some enough. Meanwhile the Magners League should be interesting, and the clubs might get a few classy volunteers!

Players welfare and professionalism are two totally separate things. I favour the latter 100%

I dont think it will ever be the same again. At least Munster won it while it was in full flow.

I love watching Munster play etc but I have to say this.................. When it looked at one point like Munster might meet Leinster in the semi final of 2007........(before both lost)..... the rugby heads were DEMANDING that the game be played in Killarney, Limerick or Croke Park.
that was cheeky and pissed me off big time

i found david corkerry on the pope and hooke road show harder to take with his comment, thank god croker is open at last,it was build by the tax payer.or something to that effect.
you cant claim mickmack that maguigan has been looked after in a proper manner, most of these player welfare schemes are mickymouse and inaffective.

The whole Munster thing really peaked last May . I have great time for the genuine Munster fan but 2 out of 3 people I know (even my own family ) were only along for the crack last May in Cardiff .The whole Heineken Cup was Hyped to the max and was built on shaky foundations . If you look at soccer FIFA and UEFA have over time ensured that they keep as much control as possible while still keeping the big clubs on side .Rugby has never dealt with this issue and now the people that will suffer are the players contracted only to the provinces who will not be able to afford the large panel's .There is a lesson here for the GAA in that all changes must be carefully thought through and clubs must not be ignored .

Rugby is almost totally funded by Corporate Ireland...Banks, Insurance Companies..If they were to rely on gate receipts at club games to pay the players there would be a lot of fellas walking around Dublin 4 with no arse in their trousers.
i know munster and leinster get bigger attendances but nationally it is not sustainable.
I feel it would be the same for the GAA if they went professional. This country is not big enough to support that many teams. The big championship games sell out but not much revenue received from 500 people standing in the rain in February

Going full professional is not an option. Some say that if we did we would be reduced to no more that ten teams and that as happened in Rugby set ups outside the big teams would suffer badly. That said failure to attend to player welfare issues including reasonable renumeration, proper medical standards at all levels, dicipline etc are surer to kill off the attraction of the association to young people. Just try selling Gaelic Football to young teenagers in Dublin and Limerick and all becomes clear. The battle for hearts and minds will have to be adressed. Outside Kerry Mayo Galway Cork Tipperary Clare Kilkenny inter county players are not recognised in their own counties. The situation up North is somewhat more complex. Stories like that of Brian Mc Guigans are an embarassment to us all. We have to change.

I've yet to come accross any person who has called for out right professionalism in the gaa for its players. The call is about proper wellfare for players in medical exspences, for loss of earnings etc.
People like brian mc guigan should not be not looked after financially. Its as simple as that. These guys generated huge amounts of funds for the exchequrer. A simple example of championship sunday around croker,a friend of mine works part time at weekends in a local watering hole verry very near to croker, average takings in the till for these sundays is 70 grand per sunday and often the same for saturday games.if the governments takes about 1.50 per point in taxes its not hard to add it up.Take accomodation and food and weekend intertainment of all types, big championship weekends bring huge amount of money to dublin.
Its a load of crap that theres not proper funds,be they government or gaa funds in place to look after players like brian mcguigan.
Also players getting 5 or 10 grand a year through a proper exspence struture dirived by the gaa and the government does not equate to professionalism.
