Hi Lads,
Following on from the debate about the lack of progression in the U21's the last few years I hink it'd be interesting to draw up a list of those who played under 21 that never made a big impression or any it to senior grade.
Dan Doona Declan Sullivan (Lispole) Padraig Sheehan Micahel O Se ( castlegregory) Micael Collins (Stacks) DJ Fleming

GAA: Heartbreak for Na Sceilge
Colaiste na Sceilge 2-12, St Jarlaths, Tuam 2-13 THE GALLANT young footballers of Colaiste na Sceilge had to stomach another heartbreaking defeat when they failed by the slenderist of margins to a resilient St Jarlath's side in a pulsating and physically draining replayed All-Ireland Colleges semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick on Sunday. This game may not have reached the same dizzy heights of the drawn encounter a week ago, nevertheless, it was a brilliant spectacle between two magnificent teams and, unfortunately, there had to be a loser after a marathon battle of three hours.
It is never easy to accept defeat at this level and to be denied a place in the final for the second successive year is very difficult to come to terms with.
In similar circumstances to last year's disappointment against St Pat's of Navan, there was a controversial goal scored that will be debated for a long time to come.
Approaching the final minutes of normal time, Colaiste na Sceilge were one point down and corner forward Joe Corridan lofted a high free into the goalmouth and it was deflected into the net by one of Jarlath's defenders.
At the other end, wing back James Kavanagh delivered a high ball into the goalmouth and there to fist it to the net was midfielder Damien Dunleavy.
The Caherciveen players were furious that the goal was allowed on the basis that Dunleavy was inside the square.
From our vantage point, the tall midfielder was, indeed, waiting for the ball in the square. This type of goal is always a contentious issue in gaelic football and some referees allow them and others do not.
Argued
No doubt, if the score was disallowed St Jarlath's would have argued the case that the goal should stand.
By strange coincidence, it was in the same goalmouth that the controversial incident occurred in last year's semi-final.
When the dust settles, trainer Jack O'Connor and his team will ponder on how they allowed their opponents back into the game, after enjoying a five point lead, with twelve minutes remaining.
Undoubtedly, they were the most impressive team up to the final quarter of normal time.
Their hardworking midfielders, Adrian Breen and David Fenton, held the whip hand and ensured a fairly constant supply of ball to the attack.
It took a while for the forwards to get their rhythm going but once they got into their stride they engineered some splendid movements and excellent scores from Kieran Cronin, Jer O'Shea, Declan O'Sullivan and Joe Corridan.
Their confidence received a tremendous boost in the 25th minute when Joe Corridan, Michael Curran and Kieran Cronin combined and the latter kicked a beautiful ball over the advancing Jarlaths custodian Donal Dowd for a goal.
Indeed the only Jarlath's forward to make an impression on the scorebord was full forward Michael Meehan who emerged as the chief villain as far as Colaiste na Sceilge were concerned.
The Caherciveen defence was magnificent, particularly in the opening half. And for thirty minutes they kept their respective opponents scoreless from play.
In the full back line John M Clifford, Wayne O'Sullivan and Aidan O'Connor were very much on top of their game and equally effective were Padraig Sheehan, Gary Galvin and Ciaran Grandfield in the half back line.
The manner in which they harrassed, intercepted, blocked down the ball and their ability to work the ball out of tight situations was top class and they really frustrated the opposition.
As stated, full forward Michael Meehan, who contributed 1-6 to the score-line, was highly influential in his side's victory.
His name is never likely to be forgotten around Caherciveen because he pulled the game out of the fire for St Jarlaths.
He had a relatively quite opening thirty minutes and was well marked by Wayne O'Sullivan but, in additional time in the first half, he served notice of his potential when he kicked over two fabulous points.
It was Meehan who delivered the crucial blow that changed the course of the game.
In the 19th minute of the second half, roaming corner forward Alan O'Hara sent a high probing kick goalwards and when everyone else hesitated the tall full forward grabbed he broken ball and buried it in the back of the net.
Meehan was switched to centre forward midway in the second half and this proved to be a master move by St Jarlath's mentors.
His inspiration rubbed off on his two midfielders, Niall Coleman and Damien Dunleavy, and centre back Gary Galvin was back to his best form following a knock in the early stages.
From the centre forward position, he kicked two more fantastic points from play and edged his side in front for the first time in the second half.
If his attacking qualities were not enough to deflate Colaiste na Sceilge, equally his defensive play also posed an obstacle that they could not over-come.
In those frantic dying moments, when Caherciveen went desperately in search of a late equaliser, Meehan denied them on two occasions.
First he fielded a dangerous ball underneath his own crossbar and in the final second he threw himself on a ball and broke the hearts of Colaiste na Sceilge.
The opening miutes of this replay were tentative and there was three minutes delay following an injury to Jarlath's centre back Darren Mullahy.
Fisted
The opening score came in the 10th minute when Kieran Cronin fisted the ball over the bar.
Jarlaths build up was often slow and in the 13th minute David Moore equalised from a free.
Two minutes later midfielder Damien Dunleavy raised their second white flag and a minute later Declan O'Sullivan, from a free had the sides on level terms.
In the 20th minute Jer O'Shea scored a nice individual point after soloing in from the right corner.
Adrian Breen was to the fore at mid-field, though he had a tendency to give away hard earned possession to the opposition.
Just prior to the goal, Declan O'Sullivan had showed for the ball but Joe Corridan kicked a long ball across the field, which was eventually sent to the back of the net by Kieran Cronin.
There was a trading of points between Warde, a free, and Joe Corridan but Jarlaths finished strongly with those two fine points from Meehan o leave the score at the interval, 1-4 to 0-5.
David Warde from a free cut the deficit to the minimum and two minutes later Declan O'Sullivan did well to collect a high ball from Jer O'Shea and up in support was corner back, Aidan O'Connor to fire over a good point.
Colaiste na Sceilge were now enjoying their best period and they were dominating most positions and centre forward Kieran Cronin was doing trojan work back in defence.
Three consecutive points from Jer O'Shea, O'Sullivan and Corridan saw Colaiste na Sceilge extend their lead to five points but Meehan's goal upped the tempo for Jarlaths and, by the 26th minute of the second half, they were in front by one point.
The game then entered its most controversial stage.
Corridan scored that fortuitous goal but Caherciveen found themselves under immense pressure following Dunleavy's goal but they dug deep to manufacture the equaliser.
Declan O'Sullivan delivered a long and accurate ball to Adrian Breen and he kicked a magnificent equaliser. The rain began to pour for the first period of extra time. Corridan edged his side in front and shortly after Bryan Sheehan saved a shot from John Devane.
Ground conditions were slippery and Caherciveen conceded two points one to David Warde, from a free, and Adrian Breen gave away possession leaving the way open for Dunleavy to score a point.
For the remaining seven minutes of the first period Colaiste na Sceilge enjoyed a good deal of possession but failed to find the range on four occasions. The scoreline was 2-11 to 2-10 as the teams resumed for the final phase.
The sides were deadlocked once more following a Kieran Cronin point. Meehan could do little wrong and in the third minute he split the uprights from a forty five.
Joe Corridan should have been awarded a free when his jersey was pulled. The sides were back on level terms when Declan O'Sullivan kicked a brilliant point from a long range free, on the right wing.
Created Two minutes remaining, would they have to meet for the third time. Dunleavy won possession and he created the opening for coner forward John Devane to punch over the winning point.
Colaiste na Sceilge received some consolation when they received a standing ovation as they made their way to the dressingrooms from the large attendance who had gathered to watch the hurling league semi final between Limerick and Kilkenny.
Jack O'Connor and his team have done their school and county proud over the last two seasons but, alas, it was not to be and their involvement ended in heartbreak for the second year running.

That is an excellent return from a team. Normally you would be lucky to get 6 or 7 still playing after a few years. It also highlights how lucky some of us are when you see Kieran Cronin's horrific injury and poor Ger 'Shea who was a serious talent. Has anyone any update on Kieran Cronin? Will he get to play ball again?

Dan Doona and Jersey Houlihan must be the best prospects of the last few years to not have made it. Doona is in the states (transferred from kerry to leitrim this year) and Jersey Houlihan has retired from all sports.

Stephen O' Sullivan and Brian Hickey never made it at county senior. If they were a few years younger I'd like to give either of them a crack at county full back right now.

Doona transfered from Kerry to Leitrim alright but you failed to mention why$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ He is a lost cause any more. His own doing. He was sought after by many at home but is in party mode no interested in using a talent other would love to have. Role on the championship in New York. Should be a good season when Leitrim need kerrymen to beat Kerry hahah
