I was talking to an old man in a pub in tralee on friday night and i asked him why are kerry always so good at football. He simply replied its because of the spanish armada. I asked him to expand on his point and he went on to say that because a lot of kerry blood is mixed with a slight bid of spanish blood that was introduced to our Great, Great, Great, Great, Great ... grandmothers by romantic spanish soldiers. This makes us faster, stronger, quicker, more skillfull and a lot more handsome than people of any other county in ireland. Was the man cukoo or is there some truth behind this?

There are more of them up in Mayo - I think they are known as the "Black Irish" - their skin in sallow all year round (think Maurice Fitz) and it does hark back to the sailors from the Spanish Armada. As for that making us better footballers I doubt it. When was the last time Barcalona won an All-Ireland :-) *note* having written the above I decided to research it and it turns out the Spanish/Iberian element is there but it is not Armada related en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Irish

the gentleman i was talking to said to look at the likes of aidan o mahony, paul galvin, tom o sullivan, aodan mac gearailt, maurice fitz. all very dark like the spanish. he said a lot of them landed in around tralee and dingle as well as ballyduff and bally longford. and breed like mad with the locals. I do notice when i travel to the east of the country there is a lot more paler fair people. (crap footballers) ha! interesting though.

the people in the east are proberly paler because their up their eyes in dept paying huge morgages for over inflated house prices, commute up to four hours a day in return trips often a hundred a miles a day,are paying up to 1200 euro per month per each kid in child care and inhale huges amount of smog, car fumes odours from inadequate sewage systems and drink containinated water supplies. whereas the one who stay in kerry usually inherite everything are dept free and have cushy jobs and drop the kids into granny to mind during the day. which invoirnment is more condusive to playing football? (tongue in cheek of course )

Mickmack, you'd have to search high and low in Kinsale in the hopes of finding anyone with Irish blood.

I wonder what type of footballer will the Polish introduce to Ireland ;D The FAI must be rubbing their hands in glee with all the Brazilians up in Gort. Gort even has a 'brazilian festival' in their honour each year.
