Hi Joan, Is that Niall Corbett of Firies? He was a Kerry minor corner back in the mid to late 90's if it is.

How's the long term future of Gaelic Football in New York and the US as a whole looking? With emmigration levels down ten fold since the Celtic Tiger it can't be be looking too rosey unless the 2nd and 3rd generation Irish and even non-Irish start to play - are there many players on the teams that fit into these categories? Would players who are living over there permanently still make up the bulk of the starting 15?

Jo90, In LA, there used to be four teams, now there is only one, and we are struggling to get 10 to training at the moment!! But during the summer you could have 25 at training on a Wednesday, and 6 on the Saturday or Sunday! Traffic is the killer, some of us will drive 25-30 miles for training and it will take an hour and a half! If a fella finishes work at 6 and training is at 6:30, there isn't a hope he'll make it unless he is less than 10 miles away. To be fair we have a few Americans, but the Irish make up most of the team. There are a few lads here who are great footballers but just either don't have the time or can't be bothered to make the time. And if fellas don't want to play, you can't make them! Hopefully this year we'll increase the numbers and try and generate a bit more interest both from the Irish here and from the Irish on J1's! Joan, how are things in New York?

Joan I suppose you know that Doyle u21 captain is rumoured to be heading Stateside this summer??!! Wasn't he out there last summer. Would seem unfair on Churchill IMO if he goes stateside, just after transferring to O'Rahillys

Enough... No comment on any player travelling or not. Ok as to the joe 90s questions. Yes numbers are down. Working very hard on the underage programs here. A lot of promising talent. Celtic Tiger? That was really never the issue. Immirgation is the problem. We are one of the lucky clubs we are still able to field two teams. We would have more Irish than american born but we go after new lads evvery year. Teams like St Rays and Barnabas would be the reverse. We will be fine here. A lot of hard work with good officers at minor senior and ladies and will hold on. Proof of this would be (and I am proud to have been involved and continue to do so) the gaelic for girls program. Started three years ago with 35 girls and we now have this year 245. Not bad in a few years. We teach the fundamentals of the game. Compete in feile with a14 all New York girls. Did very well last year. Our u-14 boys would the division 3 last year in the same comp. So I have high hope we will be fine. And there will always be people coming and staying in NY as its a place thats gets under the skin.

Yeah immigration is the biggest problem, gone are the days of coming here working on building site and making a fortune before heading back to Ireland to build a house! Immigration officials are everywhere, and there has been a huge clampdown. Boston apparently is being hit very hard. Here is a link to a great article in the Boston Globe on how Boston is becoming less and less of an Irish city because of immigration problems. www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2007/03/18/boom_times_crackdown_slow_emerald_wave?p1=email_to_a_friendThe link above goes onto two lines, so you'll have to copy and paste it rather than click on it!!!!
