Castle 1-19 Kenmare 0-21
In a game that would have graced Croke Park on All Ireland Final day Castle overcame Kenmare in the most dramatic fashion when Shane Hennessy scored the winning goal with the last kick of the game. Ryan Kelliher opened the scoring with a point after 2 minutes but Kenmare soon equalised. 2 more points from Ryan Kelliher and Patrick O’Donnell were matched by Kenmare before J B Spillane, who was absolutely outstanding throughout the game, put Castle back into the lead. 3 more points for Castle – all set up by Spillane – from Ryan Kelliher, Shane Hennessy and Alan McNamara gave Castle a 4 point cushion at half time. Kenmare were first on the scoreboard in the second half when they took 2 early points. A terrific run by Sean O’Mahony down the right side of the pitch saw him land a wonder point to put Castle 3 up. 2 points from Kenmare reduced the lead to one as the game swung from end to end. Points from J B Spillane and Alan McNamara again put Castle 3 up but once more Kenmare hit back with 3 quick points to level the game. In the 19th minute J B Spillane restored Castle’s lead and Ryan Kelliher with 2 points gave Castle a 3 point margin once more. An Alan McNamara point was matched by Kenmare but as the game went into its final minutes Kenmare hit Castle with 3 points to level the game and bring it to extra time. The first 10 minutes of extra time was a cracker as each side knocked over a further 5 points each. Ryan Kelliher (2) Shane Hennessy (2) and Tomas Lynch getting Castle’s scores. The second period was even more dramatic as both teams gave it their all in their attempt to gain the upper hand. Kenmare took a 2 point lead and looked like they were going to hang on for victory. But as the game went into injury time Joe Scully played the ball forward to Mikey Ferriter who played it on to Shane Hennessy. Hennessy let fly from the left boot and the ball crashed to the back of the net to give Castle victory in a game that will be long remembered by those who saw it. This was a terrific win for Castle but both teams deserve the highest praise for serving up a wonderful game of football played in the best sporting manner.
