The reaction to Eamon Fitzmaurices retirement has made me think about the old great Kerry team of the 70s and 80s. They came on the scene in 1975 and went away in 1987. Twelve years later. Most of them retired with 2/3 years.
The future wellbeing of Kerry was not looked after during those days because not enough new young blood was introduced on a gradual basis even if it meant dropping one of the stalwarts.
Kerry went 11 years without SAM...... a famine really.
Would people agree that new blood in needed every year even if it means the premature retirement of some current players?

Yes indeed .We have lost a lot of experience in the past number of months .Seamus .Mike Mc and now Fitzmaurice .We will not know if we have replaced them if until the white heat of championship .Its not the age its the mileage .Inter county football is now a 12 month game with these 3 guys and the veterans of 97-2000 giving great service .l thankfully we are more consistent in the league not like 98 and 2001 but the under 21 are a big let down a Cork 4 in a row is not good . who will replace Daragh at Mid Field ?.If you look at the minors of say 2004 how many have made through to the u 21 or seniors?

Be afraid... be very afraid I'd say until we win 4 senior Munster finals in a row ye can rest easy.... (oh and a few all Irelands)

since '02,maurice,barry,mike hassett, johnny, liam, daragh, donal, william, aidain mac, noel, seamus, declan, mike, eamonn have departed the scene, that represents a massive drain on resources. Its not easy to relace that level of talent.
declan, ......,barry,mike,
seamus,eamonn,mike hassett
donal,william,
liam,maurice,aidan mac,
noel,darragh,johnny.
were still competive,so i think we must be doing something right to be honest.
there still an impressive list of young players to come through.
tommy, david, paddy, young kennedy, killian, reidy, darren, paul,i wouldnt panic for a while yet.
and tadgh is down under.
cork have failed to win the all-ireland at u21 level each time, thats significant.

mickmack, that kerry team from the 70's and 80's kept winning all-irelands for fun,it would have been hard to drop any of them,of the three in a row, fourteen players held their positions with kennedy, dowd and mather interchanging at no.10,How could you drop any of that 14 just for the sake of it.
remember the cry each spring,we will do it one more time for, paidi, tommy, jacko, john etc, thats another nail in the coffin for your arguement to not let the county champions nominate the captain.

But it's not like ye are actually worried is it? I mean last year after the Munster final you'd swear that ye were never going to win another football match. With the tradition of winning, it's hard to keep ye down long. In reading so of the posts on here you'd swear ye hadn't won in years. If twas Cork or Kilkenny they would be on about doing two or three in a row.

The 11 year famine has damaged me for ever . I swear each year I will be grateful if we just win this one but by March of the following spring I am pissed off that we are not in the league final .

Adding a few players every year is good rather than trying to bring in 5 or 6 players together.
Letting the U21 team effectively go down the tubes for the last few years can't help. You don't expect the U21s to win every year but being beaten by Clare makes a bit of a joke of it. Wheres the progess for the likes of Paddy Curran Tommy Walsh Paul O'Connor etc. These are players we will want coming through in 2 or 3 years. Kerrys senior team post 87 wasn't help by the lack of U21 success from 81 to 88.

I agree totally watchthehop. U21 very important to our sucess. Player need to be kept interested and the lack of interest shown in the u21 is enough for any player to get sick of it. Development from early age in vital for surrival.

Let us never speak of 1986 - 1995 ever again. At least in 1996 we got to Croke Park and got the ball rolling.

the '90s was the only decade in nearly a 100 years of championship football that kerry didnt contest more than one all-ireland senior final.
on the plus several, schools finals, u21,junior and minor all- irelands were contested and won.
that 10 year spell mighten be as bad as first thought in the general scheme of things if someone could list everything that kerry won at every level of the game during the ninties.
i think it would be unresonable to expect kerry to reproduce every 10 years what has been achieved since '97 at senior level.Unrealistic.
In time the last 10 years will be fully appreciated.
ps.i feel kerry will win at least one more senior final before the turn of the decade,ie.in the '00s.

Only one kerry gold?? I dont know, I think Kerry has a an abundence of talent coming up the ranks. I think where we are going to lack is managment.... Finding the right balance on the side line at all Inter county levels is going to be hard

Finding the right balance on the side line at all Inter county levels is going to be hard One more from the next three championships would be a massive achievement joan,4 in the '00s,only the 80's surpasses that with 5 all-ireland victories. Its brings into prespective the level this group has operated at. If pat proves a success, he strikes me as a fellow who would stay on for a while,he is a young man and a professional coach, heres hoping things work out. the u21 situation would concern me more.

The situation at u21 level is serious and not withstanding that we still are able to add a few talented players to the senior team each year it is only a matter of time before this one catches us out. I think that managerial talent wont be as significant an issue in the immediate term. If Pat is a success and i see no reason why not then we have a couple of years to look forward to. Dont forget we have a number of Kerry men in management training and surely one or two might make the grade eventually. But underage development and particularly the approach to the U 21 competition is scary to put it mildly.
