Ronan Hussey (is that his correct name) is captain for sunday.
Will we ever get sense and award the captaincy on merit to someone with proven leadership qualities over a number of years.
No disrespect to Hussey........... he has enough on his hands ttrying to nail own a place on the team

Don't think the captaincy will be such a big deal on Sunday. He will go in for the coin toss and that will be it.
I think the captain probably should be given to the leaders on the team. BUt its tradition to give it to the county champions and tradition counts for a lot in Kerry.
In this case it would probably be easier for Hussey to be just coming in and trying to nail down a place on the team for now.

If he has any sense he will just go up for the toss, concentrate on his own game and leave Darragh, fitzy and the more experienced lads do the talking. When it gets to a stage like this it is a joke. South Kerry should nominate one man and if he is not picked/available then it should revert to the management.

The captaincy will mean nothing on sunday other than hussey will be as proud as punch leading out kerry.
the captaincy has served us well in over 100 years of football winning us 34 all-irelands out of 52 final attempts. As seamus said tradition has served this county well,i'm 100% happy with the way the captaincy is picked in kerry.Leave well enough alone.
only last week mickmack you were calling for south kerry to be kicked out of the the senior championship so that gooch, tomas and co. could rotate the captaincy, you cant have your cake and eat it.Which is it?

The captaincy fiasco has cost kerry a few all irelands in my opinion......... and we dont have to go back that far......
My argument is simple...... let the management decide who is the best leader.
Gooch and Tomas, Diarmuid, Aidan , Dara, MFR, Marc have all displayed leadership qualities on the field where it matters. Galvin and Star would need to improve on thir temperment first.
Can you imagine Isaac Boss being made captain of the Irish rugby team........ or JS Park at Man U.....even Ronaldo doesnt deserve it at this stage of his development.
It looks like this shambles is going to continue for as long as South Kerry keep winning.
Pointing to the 34 all irelands is a lazy argument with respect........ maybe it would be 40 if we had leaders as captain every year........

Is this the start of Declan O' Sullivan part 2??? Can't see what the issue is, the leaders will always lead the team weather they are captain or not.

The people from portmagee have nominated dara as captain in the event that no south kerry player makes the teams,i feel they have covered this angle good enough for me,i wouldnt be too worried about a league game in mid spring.

I have to laugh at the people kicking up fuss over South Kerry, there was no problem for the last 20 years when they were rubbish and teams were hoping to draw them in the first rounds. There was enough rubbish over Declan and the captaincy last year, lets face it, Hussey will go up for the toss, nothing else. The same leaders will be there and im sure none of them will begrudge the captaincy to him. In one line Get over itI wont lose any sleep over it and I dont think anyone else should either.

There wasnt much comment about south kerry between the mid 50's and the early eighties either.
am i right in saying that south kerry have won 5 championships, west kerry 2 championships and east kerry 3 championships in the last 30 odd years or so,thats 10 out of 30,St. kerians won one somewhere, that still leaves alot for the clubs.
producing such captains as john egan, jacko shea, paidi o se,tommy doyle, seamus moynihan etc, there isnt much unleader like in that bunch of players in fairness.

Mickmack, I can hardly remember last week not to mind last year. :-[I just meant about making an issue out of the captain situation. It's the same in Cork and I know people have been questioning it too with regards to the hurlers. The lads like Dara and co will make there presents felt on the pitch without being captain. Don't think it bothers them in the slightest cos I'm sure what's important is that ye win at the end of the day. Give the lad a chance!

the problem is with the fact that the county champions nominate the captaincy..........
i know that Kilkenny and Cork hurlers do the same but the hurling championship is farcical...........a bit like Celtic and rangers in scotland............
It does matter that the captain is a leader........... remember Seamus in 2000....... he simply grew like the michelin man in each game and inspired everyone............ like Keano. He should have been captain every year for about 5 years as he simply was BRILLIANT on the field and off the field. Dara o shea should have been his successor..............
We DO at times change things for the better in kerry. Before Jacks reign, the selectors were not chosen by the manager with disastrous consequences at times.

i'm still happy enough with the way the captaincy is decided, personally i think it enriches kerrys tradition that sam went to places, ventry, beale, dromid, valentia, rock street,glenflesk,templenoe/kenmare,listowel,finuge,the night after kerry won sam after hopping off the dublin tralee train, who can forget rossie bringing sam to his home place in '84 as a 21 year old only having played a handfull of games for kerry. These nights in various kerry outbacks are treasured events worshiped by the natives, leave well enough alone,it rarely lets us down.Imagine how boring life would be if sam only went to ventry and glenflesk for the last thirty years.
