If you feel that's the case, that's fair enough. For all i know, you're right, my knowledge of the incident only really extends to knowing that his head had blood on it. It's an interesting point of view, maybe it could be proved or disproved if someone had a video handy. Though only a real voyeur would want a video of that game! It was a strange incident, it definitly looked like something was up and i always thought the blood disproved what some people said, because it seemed like people always picked on the lack of blood on the bandage. But then again your theory takes the blood thing into account, so i dont know. I know i'm over defensive of the guy and it blinds me a bit to the notion of him doing wrong.
It's a bit hard to explain, but 1994 1995 and 1996, when i was only really a kid, Canavan was the number one guy i'd look up to. I even got the shorts and t-shirt, probably pretended to be him in the back garden, silly things like that around 1994 when i was only about 6 or 7 years old.
By the way, something i find interesting. A lot of you guys really dislike Canavan to put it mildy. Yet I've never seen or read Pat Spillane criticise the guy. In fact, the opposite, i've seen some of Spillane's book from about 2 or 3 years ago, and he praises Canavan as much as anyone, even though Tyrone came in for a heavy dose of the usual criticism. He must have been one of the only people around who also thought Canavan deserved an all-star in 2005 (which is definitly a minority viewpoint, i mean, i dont even think Tyronies thought he deserved it).

His goal and point against kerry in 2005 deserved an all star alone.
Canavan and Colm cooper are similar in that in a mili second they both can size up all options and always take the correct option.

Yep, i think teams could make a big mistake this year if all the focus is on Donaghy, Cooper could potentially run riot, though you'd think managers wouldn't be that dumb. Well Cooper could run riot anyway, it can be a damage limitation thing if he's getting good supply.

I'd be expecting alot from Cooper this year, in that the limelight & pressure is off him, and his mind should be completely on the football. Had to laugh at Ricey today - a blackguard, but the game would be alot less without him

Cooper has had a long year of football behind him and he will be doing well to reach the heights of previous years. A lot will depend on how Pat O'Shea manages the Gooch in training and in games.

Ah now MickMack - There's no way that he was cut before he ran into McCarthy ----- He ran into McCarthy (through no fault of McCarthy's) and banged his head off McCarthy's elbow - Thats what caused the cut and canavan to go down ! McCarthy shouldn't have been carded but I really don't think that Canavan tried to do this on purpose - I mean come on !!!!!!! And Joan, I've met him a few times and he's been nothing but a laugh every time - He takes the piss a bit but its all good tongue in cheek stuff ! ...... But I can't comment on your experiences ! He's really not that bad folks..................Honest

Very sad that a genius would stoop so low in front of so many people . I would say he regrets it but cant admit it.

ive much more time for the likes of Ronan Clarke,Stephen McDonnald,Paddy Bradley,Brian McGuigan than i ever would have for Canavan and that muppet Mulligan(the most over rated player in the country)

I'm not sure MickMack, it's still a bit tenuous that he was cut beforehand, i mean there's no proof, it's just speculating. You're the only person i've seen on this or any other board who's thought this, everyone goes with the tried and tested "no blood on the bandage." So what you're saying is that somehow, in some incident no-one's apparently seen (including you it seems:) ), Canavan got a bloody head, then banged his head against McCarthy's elbow in purpose in order to get him sent off? As for the whole regretting thing, it's not like he murdered anyone. If you're right (and there's no video evidence for him banging his head earlier) it resulted in someone getting a yellow-card for nothing, it happens nearly every week because of diving and what not.
Mulligan a muppet? Could a muppet do what he did against Dublin in the replay 2005? Some of his points that day were seriously good. I wouldnt consider him as any better than Clarke or McDonnell, but he's not much worse either when he gets going. Calling him a muppet's a bit over-the-top, apparently he's a top guy, jesus these arent footballers in the same way David Beckham is, give him a break, what Mulligan's apparently done wrong is beyond me. Are you one more of these guys who's hates Canavan as well then, hmm i wonder why, his big bad dive that everyone wants to lynch him for?
Canavan's touched a nerve with you guys. It's alright that McGuigan dived in the Ulster Final 2003, got Greg McCartern sent off, but then again, he never did anything seemingly wrong against you guys, so he's off the hook.
The whole argument against Canavan was based on a blind reaction that there was no blood, this is untrue, now there's some new "theory" (well i've never seen it before). It seemed to me at the time, Kerry got beat in every sector, people like Mick O Dwyer could see this, but others like Spillane and others ignore everything Tyrone done right, ignore everything Kerry done wrong, some made Canavan a scapegoat for the whole thing, demand a change in rules (Sean Walsh).
None of it was seen in the context of Tyrone of the time, people forgot the first half ever happened (except of course that Canavan did literally the worst thing ever done on a football pitch, yet no real evidence), and people ignore that despite all the blanket defence Tyrone still managed to score 4 good points from play in the second half, nearly got a goal, Kerry scored one from play in this half, and seemed unfit (Mick O Dywer feels this anyway). The reaction to that game annoyed me to be honest, no-one denies it was a bad game, but come on. It's like, Tyrone showed hunger, check, footballing ability, check, everything you want, but because we defended our lead (yet scored as many as Kerry) some people didnt seem to be able to handle it.
Basically, back to Canavan, until someone can prove otherwise, im not going to make a huge assumption that he'd actually banged his head beforehand, and it seems a bit silly that im here defending it. I dont see how anyone could find the theory that he hurt himself beforehand to be a more sound one than you know, he got a cut from banging his head on an elbow. If you can show us the incident Mickmack, i've got no reason to not believe you, but at the moment i just dont see it.
I know this is a long-assed post, but i care about such things.

I have no gripe with the result in 2003...... apart from PTG incident. Kerry were unprepared for battle. Mulligan is a great player....... never said otherwise. I have said it oft times..........forwards win matches and tyrone had the best in 2003 and 2005 ...... and maybe in 2007. The better team won in 2005.

Good to see that Kerry fans couldnt care less that they never got the better of this Tyrone team in Championship yet ;D what about '86 rashers,we let them think that they had it won by half time, the rest is history. we look at our football here as 100 year projects and judge them at the end of a centuary,it all evens out over that period of time. The new centurary has started averagely to nicely,3 all-irelands won,5 finals contested,2 national leagues won,5 munster senior championships in the first seven years, nothing particularly new about that just keeping with tradition. A few loses here and there will only be seen as blips when the lads at the end of this centuary sit down and analyse the centuary. As i said before rashers who cares whether we beat this tyrone team or not, jack, seamus, mike mac, cinneade, hasset, crowley, kirby, eamonn an a few more obviously dont share your view and consider it to be career defining or life changing. Big swing.
