canavan wouldnt have survived in the real world of championship football if he didnt learn to be a winner, its that simple,he was a small guy targeted and pollaxed by meath in the '96 semi final,it never happened to him again,i dont think we can criticise for that. His two pieces of footballing genius, his goal and point,in the '05 final were worthy of an all-ireland medal,it was the difference between kerry and tyrone winning, fair fcuks. i agree with the above.........................but .................he should have been stripped of his 2003 medal for his shameful manner of feigning injury and getting McCarthy booked. i have never witnessed anything as bad. As bad as meath were in 1996.........they never thought him to do that

As bad as meath were in 1996.........they never thought him to do that I'm a lurker who used the old board. Trust me, Canavan did not feign injury, i've got his book from 2003, and there's a large picture showing that immediately after the injury there was a long red streak of blood whatever, blood down the side of his face. Nothing serious, but this is what i see. It's actually bigger than you'd think, it was probably a small cut and the blood pissed out a bit, got cleaned up quickly. I dont know Canavan's intentions when he barged into McCarthy, but i'm sure if he wanted to dive he could do it without banging his head. Maybe you could get the picture on that sports file site that's about, i dont know. Give the guy a break, i've watched him steady since 1992 and if you deny him his all-ireland medal in 2003 it's a bit over-the-top. All that seems to matter is that Canavan did something portrayed as bad against youse, in five split seconds of his career, and that what's gonna define him for some people here. He did get cynical in his later years, but it happened for a reason. Unless you choose to believe that he's just a knacker who somehow bullied defenders, in which case he's evil, evilllll.

my reading is that Canavan got a bang in the head........ and ............saw this as an opportunity to get someone booked.................so............... over he goes............. dived into mccarthy...............falls down as if shot................ points to the blood.................ref goes over and books mccarthy.............. simple really

my reading is that Canavan got a bang in the head........ and ............saw this as an opportunity to get someone booked.................so............... over he goes............. dived into mccarthy...............falls down as if shot................ points to the blood.................ref goes over and books mccarthy.............. simple really What, so he banged his head before the incident and then "dived into mc carthy"? That seems a bit far fetched. It just seems too handy, everyone says oh when the bandage was off there was no blood. Then when someone (i.e me) says hold on a minute, there was blood when the incident occured, now there's this seemingly new idea about what happened. It's a bit hard to take your post seriously when you earlier say it's the worst thing you've ever witnessed. I seriously have doubts about what you think happened, how can you be at all sure. When was this magical incident beforehand where he bloodied his head (BEFORE the McCarthy thing). Or else you're it's just speculating. And Joan, it's this holier-than-thou attitude that annoys me, we all know some of the stuff that goes on, particularly in club games you here about. Up here in Tyrone, about a month ago, apparently, and im not sure about the whole incident, but someone got an awful battering, though im really unsure about the whole thing, i read about it on a message board which isnt the best source, but if true it was awful. Also, you see things like what Ryan McMenamin gets up to, and we know what happened when Paul Galvin came on against Tyrone in the league earlier this year (and i read people like sullys choice complaining about this, and he isnt exactly a tyrone fan). It seems like Peter Canavan is always the one who always is the target of people's annoyance on this board, though i guess it balances out with some people's views up here that he's God or something. Though i think if a player deserved an all-ireland medal you can't really look past the guy, despite his faults, and maybe i'm wrong, maybe his faults are natural rather than as a result of over-zealous markers etc, but i've seen a lot worse. I think it's ironic, i could point out cases where Canavan's dived (Tyrone vs Down 2003 for the penalty perhaps, but we were nine points down, he took the game to them), and then the incident you guys pick up on is one incident where i think things aren't just as clear as it seems. Maybe his fault is a win-at-all-costs mentality, which is probably the thing that would make him a legend up here, but isnt gonna win friends elsewhere, although it does seem like he's more a focus of dislike from kerry fans than anything else. I dont blame him for getting a win-at-all-costs mentality to be honest. This probably has parallels with the Tyrone team under Mickey Harte as a whole, but i think people unfairly act as if we're the baddies and teams like Kerry are purists who represent everything that's good with the game. I think people forget that Canavan was playing with Tyrone from 1989 to 2005, and not from 2003 to 2005. I dont know enough about your comments to say anything about him not being a gent, Joan.

In 37 years watching GAA, nothing sickened me more than that incident with mccarthy.
Kerry are no better and no worse that anyone else .............. I condemmed galvin for nasty blows v Tyrone and Dublin ...... look at those threads.
Its just that occsssionally someone takes things to a new low and it cant go unnoticed or not commented upon. Nothing personal to you by the way.......... you come across very fair and reasonable.
Canavan was a genius and irreplacable. He had a nasty dark side. I dont know how canavan got the bang on the head that caused the blood but i believe he was bleeding and decided to manufacture a yellow for mccarthy before getting treatment.
