O’Shea disappointed by Fitzmaurice decision 11 April 2007
Kerry boss Pat O’Shea has expressed disappointment at the decision of Eamon Fitzmaurice to bring the curtain down on his inter-county career.
The three-time All-Ireland winner, who is only 29, announced his retirement on Monday after failing to make the centre back position his own during the National League campaign.
“I’m very disappointed that Eamon has decided to opt out,” O’Shea said.
“He was a model player, he had a fantastic career for the best part of 10 years with Kerry, and never let the county down.
“He was a wonderful ambassador for the game and the amount of time, effort and dedication he put in was absolutely exceptional. As well as being an extremely gifted footballer, he was an absolute gentleman and he will be sadly missed by everyone connected with the panel.”
O’Shea has promised to review his squad in the coming weeks and will make a fresh attempt to coax another sterling defender, Mike McCarthy, out of retirement.

Getting Mike Mc Carthy back would be a major coup. I am praying hard.

I went off the radar for a few days to get away from TingTang land and I come back to this.....
Sweet Lord what is going on at all. We've lost significant players in the past twelve months, some expected (Seamus), some not so suprising (Mike McCarthy) and one daft (Eamonn Fitz).
While I can understand each player had their reasons for retiring, and in the case of Mike, the age of almost professional finally took its toll, I cannot understand how Sean Walsh and Pat O'Shea let Eamonn Fitzmaurice walk away.
As I keep saying, he is one of the best passers of the ball in the business. We have not resolved the full back / half back issue to any great extent and we are letting an All Star nominee in the half back position retire with a sad shrug of our shoulders.
Does anybody know if the county board burst their gut to keep Eamonn on board?

You just get the feeling that the new management did not have much time for Eamonn judging by the way they treated him in the league. He is around long enough to realise that and saw the writing on the wall. I for one feel they made a big mistake in not playing him 6 in the league and in letting him go.

I wish Eamon well he was a great servant to Kerry. Does anyone else think he was unlucky that so many forwards were missing for this years league? Missing Declan, Galvin, Brosnan Cooper and more means he was pushed up there rather than getting a run in defence. If the equivalent number of backs were gone would he have been played there. Jack O'Connor did not play him much in the backs in 2006 either.

Number 6 was his spot. He should have been giving a run there during the league. But who knows what goes on behing the scenes. I wish him well. Would have prefered to see him going under different circumstances

Colm o Rourke won his first Leinster at 29 and his first All Ireland at 30.
Several players from other counties would kill to be involved in the Kerry set up.
He must have been seriously cheesed off to walk away from it all at this time of the year with the long evenings etc.
He owes Kerry nothing. Just wish he had hung it there.
I feel that for the future of Kerry the management were 100% correct in giving youth its fling.
"Mol an og agus tiocaigh se" and all that.

owen mcrohan's article in stand point hits the nail fairly well on the head in this week kerryman,i have to say i fully agree with him.
Also worth a read is billy keane from his article On Tap where he talks about attending the wrong funeral in dublin, intertaining.Billys a fairly decent journo. His decription of PTG from a few years back was interesting when he wrote,"Peter can be as cranky as a bag of cats on a return journey after being nuetered by a handy man with a blunt knife".
Also worth a read from the back page of todays indo sports section, tabloid version,is an article on roys keanes traing methods.

A bit of a disaster that Eamonn is calling it a day. Its great the Reidy, Bohan and Young are coming through, but now is the time more than ever that a defender of Fitzmaurice's experience and commitment is needed.
I know we were low on attackers in the league but that was no reason for Eamonn to get jerked around and played as a forward where he knew he'd never hold his place.
An unsung hero is right. Sorry to see him go.

Very true,i believe if the right effort was made we could have mike mac back in full back by the 3rd of june and they could have kept eamonn aswell, its too late for eamonn but i still believe mike mac should and could be persuaded to come back.missin out on the league wont affect him,it more than likely would be of benefit to him,im not sure what efforts Pat has made to get him back but i feel he should do everything in his powers in the next fortnight to try and get mike mac back, although to be honest cant see him comin back unfortunately.Doesnt seem like a fella to go back on a decision. At the moment my defence would be, marc, tom, reidy, Tomas, aidan, mossie lyons. Maybe killian young if he's fit.

tommie griffin might come in there also at wing back kerryeye.
i dont believe its too late for either mick mac or eamonn to come back this year if the will was there, missing the league is irelevant.
both could be be hopping fit by the end of july.

Theyre probaly fit enough at the moment,if mike came in now he would be very fresh after a good break, maybe Tommy no 7 alright,Eoin brosnan is gauranteed to start with pat in charge, either midfield or centre forward id say.I think he deserves to start though,it'll be a tough job Fittin everyone in and i dont think everyone willbe playin in their favoured position,if he is to have our best 15 out.
