McGuigan set to miss rest of season
STAR Tyrone centre-forward Brian McGuigan looks set to miss another championship season because of serious injury, it has emerged.
McGuigan missed Tyrone's 2006 championship campaign after sustaining a broken leg in a club game last April and, in the latest cruel blow to Tyrone's All-Ireland hopes, it has emerged that the eye injury he sustained while playing for the Ardboe reserves against Aghyaran on Sunday is more serious than originally feared.
The classy playmaker was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from an opponent and was caught so hard that the initial damage required eight stitches from medics at Altnagelvin hospital in Derry. But the damage is now much more serious than initially suspected with some speculation in Tyrone last night putting his recovery period at up to 12 months because of the dangers of another blow in such a sensitive area.
McGuigan is due to have surgery on Friday to repair internal damage to the retina and already there is apparent improvement in his vision.
McGuigan was uncontactable yesterday but Tyrone manager Mickey Harte did confirm that his influential centre-forward would be out for the entire Ulster campaign and the first two rounds of qualifiers.
"He's out for a minimum of two months and it could be longer," confirmed Harte, who appeared to dismiss suggestions he could be out until 2008.
In addition, Enda McGinley (shoulder) has joined Tyrone's injury-list ahead of Sunday's game against Fermanagh.
Stephen O'Neill and Martin Penrose are also out because of injury. McGinley, Owen Mulligan (hamstring) and Raymond Mulgrew (knee) are all considered extremely doubtful for the Fermanagh clash.

thats a very big blow to tyrone.
hopefully he will make a full recovery with no permanent damage to his sight, that will be his priority at the moment.

Hes a huge loss for Tyrone. He is some player and did huge damage to Kerry in 2005. However you have to say he really showed what centre forward play can be...... Good luck to the guy.

CatMelodgian ! (not sure how to spell that)
Kerry could do the b2b this year I'd say.

Even if mcguigan was to come back in july or august, it has been so long since he played inter county that you would wonder if he could get up to the pace of it. Tyrone are getting way too many injuries for it to be a coincidence. Maybe they are training too hard?

Does anyone else reckon that the ridiculous amount of injuries Tyrone have accumulated relates somewhat to the style of play they have i.e. high intensity etc. Maybe not but it has to be a factor. Also interesting that a large number of these injuries occur in club games up there. Is there anything to be read into that?

i cant see mcguigan having an impact this year now, remeber he missed most of '05 also only coming back late.
Maybe the massively high tempo tyrone have played to betweem '03 and '05 is catching up with them both mentally and physically.I dont think they can surpass what they did in '05,even to match that level again will be difficult, especially when you factor in the loss of brian and canavan.
i thought there were a lot of tell tale signs in their game v kerry in tralee in the league, remember they didnt win their last league game either in a relegation situation.Sunday will tell alot about them, fermanagh will be chomping at the bit.

Best wishes to Brian.

There would be a bit of rivalry all right but nothing intentional I think...Just bloody bad luck on Brian's part. Tyrone football as you say has suffered a hell of a lot with bad luck over the last 3 years right enough .... But I suppose you'd have to say that something like a hamstring is of little consequence when you think about poor Cormac. Anyway - Good luck to Brian from now on and please give the fella a break.............. Amen !

Football has become too serious, people forget the consequences to players on a human level especially when thing go wrong with serious injury etc.Hence the need for proper structures to be put in place to look after players in their time of need.I wonder will Brian receive any dialog or correspondance from croker,i wouldnt hold me breath on that one.Shur who care once he is back for 2008!

I'm genuinely worried for the fella - He must be soooo down at the minute. You could hardly blame him if he thought about packing the whole thing in for good.... I'm sure its at least crossed his mind !

I would worry about a guy that age missing two years in a row at this stage of his career. i can't see him coming back to being the plaer he was or at least it will be very hard to become a better player. Very unfortunate.

You wouldnt know animal,he might, pat spillane came back after being out for two years to become better than ever before at a time when medicine was not as advanced as it is now.It depends on his will to do so really and maybe how competitive tyrone will be at that time.
His only priority now will be health and looking after that and making sure his sight will be ok.His family know all about football at the highest level in his house at home and that will be a massive help to him to have those kind of people around him.
Maybe some good will come out of it and bring it home to people that these elite footballers at the highest level can not be be compared to the volunteers at club level such as the net hangers as decribed in an recent article.
